The Inaugural Meeting and First Academic Conference of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Committee of the Shenzhen Biomedical Engineering Society Successfully Convened

On the afternoon of March 16, 2025, the Inaugural Meeting and First Academic Conference of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Committee of the Shenzhen Biomedical Engineering Society (hereinafter referred to as the “Committee”) were solemnly held at the Lihu Campus of Shenzhen University. The event was organized by the Shenzhen Biomedical Engineering Society, co-organized by Shenzhen Segsais Medical Technology Co., Ltd., and brought together over a hundred representatives from Shenzhen’s medical, industrial, and academic communities to witness the birth of this milestone academic platform in the field of minimally invasive surgery.

The conference was hosted by Zheng Zhe, the dedicated Secretary-General of the Shenzhen Biomedical Engineering Society, and attended by notable figures such as Professor Chen Siping, former Vice Chairman of the Shenzhen Political Consultative Conference, former Vice President of Shenzhen University, and founding former president of the society; Professor Dan Guo, Vice President of the society; Professor He De, Director of the Department of General Surgery at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Shenzhen University; and Feng Gengchao, General Manager of Shenzhen Segsais Medical Technology Co., Ltd. Guests included heads of surgical and related departments from major medical institutions in Shenzhen, scholars from universities, representatives of investment institutions, and industry experts, demonstrating a deeply integrated academic framework of “medicine, academia, research, industry, and finance.”

After nearly three months of intensive preparation, the candidate list for the committee leadership was finalized. During the preparation phase, Professor He De and Dr. Feng Gengchao convened experts from multiple fields in Shenzhen, including clinical doctors, enterprise representatives, and university researchers, for in-depth discussions. The nominated candidates represented 60% of clinical doctors from Shenzhen’s major medical institutions, along with outstanding individuals from universities, investment institutions, and enterprises.

At the meeting, Professor Dan Guo announced the approval documents for the establishment of the committee and emphasized that the preparations strictly adhered to the society’s charter, with all conditions being fully met. In his inaugural speech, Chairperson He De expressed heartfelt gratitude for the trust of all members and solemnly committed to fulfilling future responsibilities. He stated that the establishment of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Committee marks an important practice in interdisciplinary collaboration, aiming to integrate resources from multiple disciplines, establish a high-level academic exchange platform, and elevate medical-engineering interdisciplinary cooperation to new heights. The committee will focus on key bottleneck issues in minimally invasive technology, striving for breakthroughs to better meet the health needs of the public.

As one of the society’s founders and former president, Professor Chen Siping of Shenzhen University highly praised the significance of the committee’s establishment in his speech. He elaborated on the importance of minimally invasive surgery and its role in advancing medicine through examples like electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopic surgery and emphasized the cross-disciplinary integration characteristic of biomedical engineering, termed “Med+X.” Professor Chen proposed three support directions: relying on the biomedical engineering team and comprehensive talent cultivation system of Shenzhen University, strengthening committee organizational development, and leveraging Shenzhen University’s achievement transformation center and investment resources to assist the committee in jointly promoting the development of minimally invasive surgery.

The establishment of the Minimally Invasive Surgery Committee of the Shenzhen Biomedical Engineering Society signifies a new stage of multidisciplinary collaborative innovation in Shenzhen’s minimally invasive surgery field. In the future, the committee will lead academic-driven technological innovation, promote industry upgrades through integration, and contribute Shenzhen’s wisdom and strength to the construction of a healthy China.
